Statistics, data, and numbers have been around since the beginning of time when it comes to sports.
What has evolved since then is the level to which this data has impacted sports models, predictions, and the casual fan’s overall enjoyment of the product.
We are living in a time where data has truly become completely entrenched in sports. Collecting data allows for predictions, models, and informed decisions to be made for future events, even for ones taking place as early as the next day. It also allows for long-term research and models to be developed and created.
Looking Back
On May 14, 2018 the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was unconstitutional.
Up until this point, sports wagering was only legal in 4 states who were lucky enough to be grandfathered in, with Nevada being the most well-known. Overnight, the Court’s ruling left it up to each of the 50 individual states to make their own laws and decisions about how they wish to regulate their own sports wagering, daily fantasy sports, and in-running gaming industries.
